What Is a Measurement Unit?
A measurement unit is a defined quantity used as a reference for comparison. Inches, centimeters, and meters are each a fixed, agreed-upon length. Without shared units, two people measuring the same person can report different numbers and both be technically correct.

Two measurement traditions developed independently: the imperial system in Britain and the metric system in France.
